Predicting and Eliminating Squeak & Rattle Noise in Vehicle Interiors with PSA Peugeot Citroën
During the development of new vehicles, PSA Peugeot Citroën Group (PSA) wanted to take the lead in using simulation technology to detect squeak and rattle noise problems, before physical testing was possible. Multiphysics Design Optimization Using an Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis
Optimal design methods involving the coupling of fluid and structural solutions are a topic
of active research; particularly for aerospace applications. The paper presents a coupled fluid and structure approach to topology optimization using two commercial finite element solutions; AcuSolve and OptiStruct. A gradient based method is used to minimize the compliance of a structure subject to thermal loading. The optimal material distribution to minimize compliance is computed using the Solid-Isotropic Material with Penalty (SIMP) method available in OptiStruct. A volume fraction constraint is imposed in order to iteratively reduce the parts mass. Draw constraints are used to ensure manufacturability. The thermal loading is computed iteratively using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solution from AcuSolve. The optimization produces an innovative design which increases the heat rejection rate of the part while reducing the mass.

An Automated Head Impact Process Setup for Automobile Instrument Panel (IP) Application
FMVSS 201 procedure originally rolled out in 1968 by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Administration to protect the automobile occupants from fatal injury during the crash. Since the beginning of the law, the automobile interior safety has become considerably more challenging for manufacturer to meet FMVSS 201 standard criteria. During the course of instrument panels (IP) development, engineers are heavily relied on computer simulation to optimize the design for a more robust design. Based on FMVSS 201, there are an infinite number of target points on the instrument panels that must be tested for head impact performance. Therefore, this becomes not only costly but it is impossible for the manufacturer to test all possible target points using the current conventional process.

Scania Customer Story
Squeak and rattle phenomena are studied in the automotive industry in an attempt to reduce the cabin noise and as a result, give a better ride quality and comfort to occupants. In the case of Scania’s Cabin Development Department, this kind of simulation was not performed historically. The team had to rely on tolerance calculations as well as the choice of materials to reduce the risk of squeak and rattle. HyperWorks Enables Global Appliance Manufacturer to Use New Material for Stronger, Lower-Cost Product
To qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the stress on the door cover during thermal expansion and contraction, the engineers used HyperMesh, a high-performance finite element pre-processor and RADIOSS, a modern structural analysis and optimization solver, both of which are part of Altair’s HyperWorks suite of computer-aided engineering tools. With these tools, engineers created a computerized simulation of the refrigerator door cover temperature field, employing HyperMesh to create a finely meshed model of the upper and lower covers, while shell elements were used to mesh the steel plate and interior lining, along with solid elements for the foaming material.

Lead Time Reduction using Automatic Reporting Director (ARD) for MAHLE
Mahle is one of the top automotive suppliers and one of the top 3 piston suppliers worldwide. With the recent advancements in numerical simulation and computing power, the FEA process has become a major tool to look at the reliability of different design variants. With these advancements, the reporting aspect remained a relatively unchanged process of manually creating pictures and tables with all of the different results. This presentation will look at the collaboration work between Mahle and the Altair Product Development (PD) team to customize the Automatic Reporting Director (ARD) for Mahle's requirements. The goal was to use to better utilize the engineers time by automatically generating a report with standard formats, pictures, and tables. By using the ARD tool, Mahle was able to reduce the lead time for a report from over 4 hours down to less than 1 hour.

The Complete Package: Applying Altair's Technology Process to Reusable Packaging Design
This paper demonstrates the flexibility that Altair technology provides throughout the design process with tools applicable to all stages. An overview of the LINPAC design process incorporating Altair's technology is given together with examples of how and which tools are being implemented. The limitations of the traditional LINPAC approach and the use of Altair's tools is demonstrated through the use of a detailed example; without the use of Altair technology, more iterations in expensive tool modifications would have been required to achieve a satisfactory design without introducing unacceptable costs.

The huge capacity of a pickup comes at the expense of storage. The loading area is often a simple box with no ability to store smaller items safely or secure them from theft. Lance founded DECKED with his business partner, Jake Peters, with a shared determination to create an innovative, robust and useful storage solution for both commercial users and private owners alike. The system had to be able to withstand a load of 2,000 lbs, fit it into a wide range of pickup models including those from Ford, GM, Chrysler, Toyota and Nissan and be manufactured for a compelling retail target price. Design Optimization of Axles using Inspire and OptiStruct
Use Inspire to form optimization from the packaging space, performance loading and manufacturing constraints to design an axle close to production ready design. The model setup requires careful setting of axle internal component design and oil flow consideration. Since Inspire does not provide weighting for different load cases, the author was able to gain from trial run to determine the balanced load application, mass target and meshing size requirement to obtain realistic design.
